The Corner

A powerful night of culinary creativity, personal stories, and community spirit highlights the life-changing journeys of young people and families supported by The Corner Health

An atmosphere of excitement, gratitude, and purpose filled the room as community members gathered for A Three-Course Celebratory — a premier fundraising event benefiting Corner Health Center, affectionately known as “The Corner.”

The evening blended culinary competition, heartfelt storytelling, and community connection into an unforgettable experience designed to showcase the transformation that happens when young people — and their children — walk through The Corner’s doors.

A Warm Welcome and a Fierce Kitchen Showdown

The event began with a warm and gracious welcome from Executive Director Alex Plum, who thanked guests for their ongoing partnership and belief in The Corner’s mission. His message set the tone for a night centered on gratitude and hope.

Guiding the evening’s festivities was Dan Huntsbarger, owner of Moveable Feast, who served as Master of Ceremony. With energy and humor, Huntsbarger introduced the highlight of the night: a live “Chopped”-style cooking competition featuring three expert community chef.

Each chef faced a basket of surprise ingredients and a ticking clock. The challenge? Create a standout main course under pressure. As aromas filled the room and guests watched the culinary creativity unfold, a panel of judges from across Washtenaw County evaluated each dish.

  • At the end of the spirited competition, one chef was crowned champion. The winner received a $500 cash prize, a trophy, a celebratory photo opportunity — and most importantly — a paid invitation to return to The Corner to lead cooking lessons for young people served by the organization.
  • More Than a Meal

While the live cooking competition captivated the audience, the evening’s deeper impact came during the “mission moments” — powerful reflections that revealed both the successes and ongoing needs of The Corner’s work.

Guests enjoyed a thoughtfully prepared three-course meal, but it was clear the nourishment extended far beyond the plate. Attendees gained a clearer understanding of how The Corner serves adolescents and young families with integrated medical, mental health, and supportive services — often meeting needs that extend well beyond what first brings someone through the door.

“This is a new type of event for our community,” one attendee shared. “Fun, engaging, and meaningful all at once.”

A Story That Stilled the Room

One of the most moving moments of the evening came when former client Megan Wright took the stage to share her story.

Her voice, steady yet emotional, resonated deeply with donors and sponsors alike.

“When I first came to Corner Health during my pregnancy, I was looking for medical care,” Megan explained. “What I found was so much more than that. I found a community. I found support. I found people who truly saw me — not just as a patient, but as a whole person navigating one of the most important and vulnerable seasons of my life.”

Megan spoke about walking into The Corner seeking one type of service, only to discover a network of care that addressed her mental and emotional needs as well. Her testimony underscored the organization’s holistic approach — one that wraps young people in dignity, compassion, and opportunity.

Her words moved the audience to action. Several donors and sponsors sought her out afterward, eager to thank her personally and express their commitment to sustaining the programs that had changed her life.

A Community United for a Cause

A Three-Course Celebratory proved to be more than an event. It was a vivid reminder that when a community gathers with intention — whether around a kitchen competition or a shared table — real transformation happens.

Through generous support, spirited participation, and powerful storytelling, guests left inspired by what is possible when young people are met with care, respect, and comprehensive support.

At The Corner, transformation is not just a word — it is a lived experience. And on this special evening, the community tasted, witnessed, and celebrated that reality together.
