The Road Home Documentary Premieres at the Michigan Theater, Sparking Community Conversations on Housing, Mental Health, and Homelessness

Ann Arbor, MI – March 30, 2026 - As housing insecurity, mental health challenges, and homelessness continue to rise, a new documentary is bringing Washtenaw County into a critical conversation about both the realities of the crisis and the responsibility to respond.

The Road Home, directed by two-time Emmy Award winning director Kameron Donald, presented by Breyko and the Ann Arbor Housing Commission, will premiere with a free screening on April 23, 2026 at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, with additional screenings throughout Washtenaw County. The film explores the systems surrounding housing insecurity, mental health, and homelessness while highlighting both the challenges and opportunities to better support those in need.

At its core, the documentary focuses on the systems that are intended to support people. While it includes perspectives from individuals with lived experience, the film takes a broader approach by examining how funding, policies, and regulations impact the effectiveness of those systems and the ability to provide support when and where it is needed most.

Across Washtenaw County, many people do not have access to the resources they need. Some cannot afford to live in the same communities where they work. Others are navigating housing insecurity or currently experiencing homelessness, while organizations working to support them are stretched thin. Many of these organizations are underfunded and facing uncertainty around

“Through this documentary, ultimately we want to help people that are dealing with these issues” says Kameron Donald. “But to truly support when and where people need it most, we have to look at the systems, funding and policies that shape what is possible and now is the time to do so”.

As federal resources become less reliable, the film points to a growing shift. Communities are being called to look inward for solutions through stronger local collaboration, aligned funding, and shared responsibility across organizations, institutions, and the private sector.

The Road Home is designed to bring organizations and companies back to the table, reengage the community, and create space for new approaches to moving this work forward.

Following the premiere, the documentary will be screened throughout Washtenaw County, with each event including panel discussions that connect people with local leaders, organizations, and available resources.

“The time is now,” Donald added. “This is a moment for communities to come together and figure out a new way forward.”

The April 23 premiere at the Michigan Theater is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP through the Michigan Theater website.
