Wine Spectator's 43rd Wine Experience—which benefited the Wine Spectator Scholarship Foundation—kicked off with an all-star evening featuring more than 260 of the world's best wines, from Caymus' Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2022 to Masseto's Toscana 2017 to Quinta do Noval's Vintage Port 2021. A 30-Year Journey: How Viña Carmen Brought Carménère Back to Life

How did Carménère—a Bordeaux variety that was thought to be extinct until the 1990s—become Chile’s signature grape? It all started in the vineyards of Viña Carmen, where a French ampelographer discovered that a curious plot of Merlot was not, in fact, Merlot at all. In the years since Carménère was rediscovered in Viña Carmen’s vineyards, the winery has fully invested in bringing this noble red grape back to life, searching for the best terroir and honing the right viticultural techniques to craft expressive, delicious Carménère wines.
