The room buzzed with vibrant energy—laughter echoing like music, hands clasped in warm greetings, and eyes shining with recognition and pride. It was a tapestry of shared purpose: bold blazers, colorful scarves, and confident voices weaving together stories of strength and success. The atmosphere pulsed with possibility as women leaned in, exchanged cards, shared ideas, and sparked collaborations. Inspiration flowed like sunlight through the room, illuminating new connections and kindling dreams once held in silence. Each conversation was a reminder: when women come together in support and solidarity, barriers fall, confidence soars, and entire communities rise.

With a radiant smile and a heart for justice, Mildred Hayman Johnson has transformed the lives of women who are often forgotten. As the founder and driving force behind Empowering Services, Mildred’s mission is deeply personal: to ensure that every incarcerated woman is seen, supported, and given a path to restoration.
Through the Her Turn program at Washtenaw County Jail, Mildred shows up every Sunday—bringing with her hope, dignity, and the belief in new beginnings. Her journey from a successful financial services career to community leadership is fueled by her strong academic foundation, with degrees from the University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, and Desting Christian University. For over 30 years, Mildred has called Ann Arbor home, where her faith, compassion, and tireless service continue to light the way for others.
Eileen Thacker is known for her boundless energy and a heart that beats for service. With dual master's degrees in Education and Social Work, she has spent decades building bridges between people, programs, and possibilities. Whether working in healthcare, education, or community-based prevention, Eileen’s passion lies in supporting others and nurturing meaningful connections.
Her involvement spans a wide range of organizations—from Hadassah, ORT, and Ele’s Place, to the University Musical Society, WCC Women’s Council, and Jewish Family Services. As someone who believes deeply in the power of partnership, Eileen has become a cornerstone of collaboration in Washtenaw County. She and her husband Ted have made Ann Arbor their home for 30 years, where her warmth, humor, and leadership continue to enrich the community.
Creative, thoughtful, and strategic, Dr. Deborah Mitchell Covington leads with vision and purpose. As Director of Strategic Partnerships and Equity Initiatives at the University of Michigan College of Engineering, she works to create spaces of inclusion and belonging for underrepresented students and institutions.
Her impact stretches beyond academia. As the founder of VestedIn U, LLC and All Things Artistic Ministries, Inc., Dr. Covington empowers youth through faith-based arts education, inspiring confidence and creativity. She also chairs the Board of the African American Cultural and Historical Museum, preserving and elevating Black heritage in Washtenaw County. Recently appointed to the Historic District Commission, her dedication to honoring the past is matched only by her passion for shaping a more inclusive future. With degrees from Michigan State, University of Michigan, and Ashland Theological Seminary, she blends scholarship with heart in every endeavor.
These extraordinary women remind us that leadership is not just about titles—it's about impact. It's about showing up, speaking up, and lifting others along the way. The Women’s Council is honored to shine a light on Mildred, Eileen, and Dr. Covington—not only for what they’ve accomplished, but for the countless lives they’ve touched.
Their stories inspire us to lead with empathy, connect with purpose, and serve with love.
We celebrate them not only for what they do, but for who they are.
