ANN ARBOR — Long before the music swelled and the speeches began, the heart of the University of Michigan’s commencement ceremony was already beating steadily at the entrance of the Auditorium.

You could hear the beat of the shuffle of thousands of feet. You could see the nervous laughter, the deep breaths, the trembling hands gripping gowns. And you could feel the simple, human gestures of one community volunteer Denise Davis who stood outside to the photo booth passing out information for graduates, offering congratulations — and sometimes a hug — to every graduate who passed.

“I must have said congratulations to at least a thousand students,” she said afterward, still glowing from the experience. “I gave hugs to strangers, smiles, and love. It was the best part of my day.”

For the graduates, that moment of connection often landed with surprising force. Some walked in with wide, confident grins. Others approached quietly, their eyes glassy with emotion. A few paused, overwhelmed by the weight of the day — the years of work behind them, the uncertainty ahead.

But each one received the same thing: a reminder that they mattered.

“It felt like every student carried a different story in their eyes,” she said. “Some were excited, some nervous, some emotional. You could feel all of it.”

Parents and families watched from a distance as their students crossed that threshold — a symbolic doorway between who they had been and who they were becoming. Inside the Auditorium the ceremony would celebrate their achievements. But outside, in those fleeting seconds, something quieter and more personal unfolded.

A hug for courage. A smile for reassurance. A moment of love for a stranger stepping into the unknown.

“What they will do now is up to them,” she reflected. “But for that one moment, I just wanted them to feel seen.”

As the last of the graduates disappeared into the building, the campus settled into a soft hum — the kind that follows a day filled with meaning. The future may be uncertain for each new Wolverine alum, but yesterday, at least, they walked into it with a little more warmth than they expected.

And sometimes, that’s enough to change everything.
