Celebrating Freedom, Building Together TechTown Detroit

Hi Friends,

One hundred and sixty-one years ago this Friday, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally received word that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. That gap is part of the story. So is everything that came after: the celebration, the resilience, the culture, and the generations who carried that moment forward into a movement.

Economic freedom has always been part of that movement. The ability to build something, own something, and pass it on. Black-owned businesses are a cornerstone of this city, and that work doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens in communities that show up for each other.

At TechTown, supporting founders and builders from every background is what we're here for. We're proud to be part of a city that carries that spirit forward every day.

Happy Juneteenth from all of us.

From workshops to pop-ups, there is something for everyone coming up:

What We're Watching: TED-Ed, Juneteenth Edition

This week we're sharing a short TED-Ed video that traces the full story of Juneteenth, from the long, uneven process of emancipation to the moment June 19, 1865 became a turning point in history. It covers everything from the Emancipation Proclamation to the ratification of the 13th Amendment, and why Galveston, Texas holds a special place in that story. Watch here before Friday!

We are so glad to have you with us!
